This is a love story between two very different people bonded by the same feelings of failure they have within each other. Mia learns some unsettling news and decides to take back her life from her controlling boyfriend and leaves. She has no where to go, no family or friends to help and worst of all only enough money to get on the bus and away from her crappy life. Kai is ex-military and harbors a deep sense of loathing because of deaths he feels he should have been able to prevent from happening. Some of the background on this is found in the first book, which I haven't read and could still easily follow along and get into this story. Kai finds a chance at redemption when he discovers Mia on a park bench and talks her into letting him help her. Mia has an instant attraction to Kai but knows she shouldn't act on it because of her past relationship. Kai has insta-feelings for Mia when he sees her but doesn't want to come across as an opportunist. It takes a lot for Mia to let her walls down but when she does their love quickly takes off (we're talking months here). Mia and Kai set off to begin a life of love and contention when Mia's past is suddenly resurfaced.
The quickness from which it seems these characters fall in love is a little far fetched but doesn't distract from the story to the point where you go "wth did I just read?" It's beautifully written and has a good dose of suspense thrown in there too. Kai is definitely all alpha but Mia is a "bad-arse" in her own right and you fall in love with these characters despite their flaws.
